I woke up this morning, as I so often do, to the sounds of my friends on the Today show relaying the important news of the day. Sandwiched between the usual news stories, i.e., the current state of affairs in Iraq, the 2008 election, and the weather, was a story that not only outraged me but deeply saddened me. In case anyone missed it, the story was about how Maxim magazine published what they editors perceive to be as the top 5 most unattractive women in showbiz list. SERIOUSLY??? Is there a shortage in the B-list circuit of untalented, semi-naked pseudo-celebrities that they need to resort to compiling a list of the ugly in Hollywood…which is a subjective opinion by the way.
My outrage here is two-fold. The first fold is one of sadness. How heartless are the editors at Maxim that they not only canvassed men across the country to compile this list, but then nefariously published the results? Lets not forget that most of the women on this list are some of the greatest talents of our time (sorry Britney) and just because they do not fall into the category of what is currently perceived as “hot” does not mean that they are unattractive and therefore worthy of public ridicule.
In writing this, I was curious to see what the men at Maxim look like since they apparently are the unequivocal deciders of what is “hot.” Please refer to the snapshots I found of the hot men of Maxim.
This is David Itzkoff – former editor of Maxim. Should I go on?

This is Keith Blanchard who is the current editor of Maxim. At the risk of sounding shallow, I would have to say that Mr. Blanchard is hot, in that old school Mark and Brian, Oakley sunglasses, Van-Halen t-shirt wearing rock-star wannabe from Scranton kind of way.
Clearly, these two men are acting well within their God-given rights to determine who is and more importantly, who isn’t attractive and as a consequence of being ugly, deserve national scorn.
The second fold of my contempt goes to the age old saying that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder…surely there are people out there, millions perhaps, that think the women on the “ugly” list are actually beautiful and worthy of love, just as I am sure that there are women out there who think that Mr. Blanchard and Mr. Itzkoff are beautiful men, aside from their mothers.
What I really want to know is why women who are enhanced through surgery, hair coloring, sunless tanning, starvation diets etc. are regarded as “hot” and yet without all of that work they might actually be just normal looking and consequently in the eyes of Maxim, ugly.
What it boils down to I suppose, is that any woman can achieve ultimate hotness if they can afford to or have the desire to alter their natural appearance to the point of no longer looking like themselves and instead looking like carbon copies of each other. Maxim should rename its list of the so-called ugly celebrities to reflect what they really are, original which most people would agree is far more attractive and appealing than the same old thing.

I can't believe that these a--holes are responsible for putting this list together. Nothing like calling the kettle black.
